Raise your voice to influence

Every day across the UK people are making decisions that affect your work. You are the most effective advocate to decision makers about the key issues affecting the profession and your patients.

The CSP have produced an Influencing Toolkit which is full of tips to help you build relationships, influence and create momentum. Here are some ideas for steps you can take to maximise your influence within your local healthcare system.

What influencing can achieve…

Help others to recognise the difference physiotherapy can make.

Steps you could take

Make sure you are collecting data which demonstrates the impact and value of your work and that you are presenting your data in an accessible, easy to understand way.

What influencing can achieve…

Win hearts and minds.

Steps you could take

Stories which demonstrate how your work impacts the lives of your patients are such powerful tools. Gather patient case study stories and consider who you could share them with for maximum impact.

What influencing can achieve…

Create opportunities, such as for funding or contracts.

Steps you could take

Identify the people in your networks who could be key decision makers, or who could help you reach key decision makers.  Think about how you can build your relationship with them.  Develop your skills in building business cases – your learning and development department may have training for this, or speak with someone who has successfully developed a case.

What influencing can achieve…

Raise the profile of physiotherapy services.

Steps you could take

Develop an ‘elevator pitch’ – clearly articulate what your work delivers for patients and the system in 30 seconds or less!
Attend a local AHP day, or chat with your organisation’s communications team about how you can raise the profile of your work with colleagues or wider.

What influencing can achieve…

Extend and grow your network and build new partnerships.

Steps you could take

Join a professional network or get actively involved in the work of your local CSP regional network or country board. Look at your local health and social care system through a broad lens to spot new prospective partnerships.

Third sector organisations, patient participation forums and local sports or leisure service providers could all be potential partners in your work.
