The awards, in London on 24 April, were designed to recognise the best of British healthcare and honour people who excel in their roles.

Respiratory specialist Ms Moses was named as a runner-up and Lydia Barker, a bereavement midwife, as the overall winner.

On the following day, Good Morning Britain hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid invited Ms Moses on to the show and asked about her treatment of people with life-limiting diseases and end of life care.

She was able to describe her work with a wide spectrum of patient groups who have respiratory muscle weakness and need long-term ventilation to survive. They include children with congenital diseases, such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, or adults who have acquired conditions, particularly motor neurone disease.

Band 8

Ms Moses told Frontline she wanted to demonstrate the value of consultant physiotherapy posts to the NHS, saying: ‘Band 8 posts are being cut and we need to show the added value for patients of getting expert clinical care.

‘Because I am empowered to work at consultant level within my scope of practice, this can make a significant impact on people’s lives.’

A spokesperson for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, where Ms Moses works, said she had been shortlisted because she ‘consistently goes above and beyond to help her patients, and their families’.

Karen Partington, chief executive at the trust, said: ‘Rachael is a fantastic example of how we are committed to providing excellent care with compassion for our patients, and I am delighted that her hard work and dedication has been recognised.’
