Prime minister Theresa May’s major speech on NHS funding contained welcome messaging but was undermined by recent history, the chief executive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has said.
While there was little new detail on how the money would be raised or spent, Mrs May used the speech to outline some of her priorities for the NHS.
Prof Karen Middleton, who was in the invited audience for the event, said: ‘There was much to like in the prime minister’s speech - on prevention, on workforce and on technology.
‘But we won’t cut obesity by also cutting public health.
‘And we won’t improve the wellbeing of staff while we ask ever more of them because of shortages among key professions - we are 4,000 physiotherapists short, for example.
‘So we welcome the end to austerity that was signalled this weekend, but it must be accompanied by an end to that self-defeating, quick fixes and game-playing that have defined the past eight years.
‘Not least, we need solutions and money to end the crisis in the social care system, which also turns 70 this year.’
