East Coast has trained more than 360 of its staff and nearly 100 from partner organisations in health coaching. Among its six accredited coaches are senior physiotherapist Kieran Morling and physiotherapy clinical specialist David Sweeting.

For the past four years, East Coast Community Healthcare has been training its clinicians in health coaching techniques. Health coaching is about having different conversations with patients, promoting health, independence and preventing the onset of acute illnesses.

It believes this helps patients to make healthier choices, motivates them to self-manage and improves their results.

The initiative has also benefited staff, according to the organisation. It said they had reported feeling more confident that patients were happy with their care. Staff felt a greater sense of achievement and less pressure too.

The social enterprise, which provides community health services including physiotherapy, won the award for the best coaching and mentoring initiative at the CAKE People Development Awards. The event took place at Newmarket Racecourse in late 2018.

Mr Morling said: ‘As a coaching team we have worked very hard to embed these skills in our organisation. We are delighted to have been recognised for the advances we have made.

‘Introducing health coaching into our consultations helps our service users to take ownership of their care programme. It also helps them to set realistic goals that they want to achieve and that we can help them towards.

‘I’m very proud of everyone at East Coast for embracing health coaching principles with such enthusiasm.’
