An important programme of work in England being led by Health Education England has been developed to support NHS trusts to deliver robust allied health professions (AHP) workforce plans.
CSP professional adviser Claire Fordham said: ‘One stream of this programme is an exciting project which aims to recognise, develop and expand the AHP non-registered workforce.’
It is hoped that the work will result in:
- improved education standards, access and uptake for AHP support workers
- growth of the AHP support workforce alongside the registered workforce
- improved retention of the AHP support workforce and reduction in current vacancies
- improved diversity of the support workforce

The CSP has been very involved in supporting this project and Claire Fordham sits on the project steering group.
‘A number of our Associate members have been offered band five secondments in their local trusts to lead AHP support workforce mapping,’ Ms Fordham said.
