Best MSK Health Collaborative launches new MSK toolkit

Physiotherapists, clinical leaders and other healthcare staff can now access a range of musculoskeletal (MSK) service resources, contained in a new Primary and Community Care Guidance MSK toolkit.

A physiotherapist treats a patient with a musculoskeletal condition.

The new toolkit was launched this week, by NHS England and NHS Improvement, and is available as part of the Best MSK Health Collaborative workspace on Future NHS.

CSP was a partner in the development of the new toolkit, which offers best practice clinical guidance to help support service recovery and transformation opportunities for patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis, spinal pain, sciatica and shoulder pain – both in primary and community care, and across the entire MSK pathway.

Welcoming the new toolkit, Sue Hayward Giles, CSP assistant director of practice and development, said: ‘This superb new resource supports the recovery and transformation of MSK services.

It offers a wealth of guidance that I would commend to local clinical leaders, and ask them to consider how they engage with their teams and other MSK pathway stakeholders

‘The toolkit provides best practice material that will need to be considered at place level and flexed to meet local needs, and I think it will be of value to anyone who is part of delivering an MSK service.’

Among the topics covered by the toolkit are sections on

  • clinical guidance
  • digital innovation
  • outpatient transformation opportunities
  • shared decision making
  • onward referrals
  • MSK workforce opportunities

And each section provides links to evidence-based resources, current best practice guidance and other relevant MSK resources.
