The UK Government's latest plans to recover emergency NHS services in England have been announced today, with rehabilitation and physiotherapy being highlighted as key factors.
The focus of the UK Government's delivery plan for recovering urgent and emergency care services will see £1bn invested in improving capacity across the NHS. The plan details how the money will include "5,000 new beds as part of the permanent bed base for next winter."
Growing the workforce, speeding up hospital discharge, expanding services in the community, help people access the right care first time, and tackling unwarranted variation all form key areas where the government has promised action.
The CSP has broadly welcomed the announcement, but is keen to emphasise that the current dispute over pay, must be resolved.
Karen Middleton, CSP chief executive, said:
“This £1bn investment is sorely needed and welcome. It is encouraging that physiotherapy and rehabilitation both feature strongly throughout these plans since it is rehabilitation that plays a vital part to ensure that patients don’t enter the costly cycle of admission, discharge and re admission into hospital.
'To make this a reality, and for rehabilitation to help reduce pressure on emergency departments, we must have a workforce plan that ensures we have a fully-funded, fully-staffed rehabilitation workforce which includes a resolution to the NHS industrial disputes which are currently unresolved.'
