TUC invites observers to annual Congress

To attract greater diversity within the union movement, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) is inviting affiliate unions to add observers to their delegation to Congress 2023.

Congress is the annual, policy making body of the TUC.  Union delegates from across the movement come together to decide the TUC’s priorities for the coming year.

Its 155th session is running in Liverpool 10 – 13 September 2023. This year, the TUC’s affiliate unions are encouraging members from underrepresented groups – in particular young and Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic workers – to register as additional observers.

CSP members are encouraged to join our voting delegates – selected through an open recruitment process earlier this year – to get a front row seat to the union movements’ democratic decision making processes.

Rajkumar Samuel, chair of the CSP BAME network is encouraging members to put themselves forward for this opportunity. Rajkumar said, ‘Unions’ collective work should reflect the breadth of their members’ experiences, and be attuned to traditionally underrepresented groups.

'By attending Congress, you will gain a clearer understanding of how the CSP seeks to influence, and how you in-turn can influence the CSP.

'You will also get to talk to activists from across healthcare and beyond, helping to link up workers’ struggles that are too often fought in isolation.’

Members wanting to put themselves forward are asked to express interest through our webform.

Alternatively, contact CSP enquiries team.

Observers may wish to attend part of the programme, rather than the full event.

Celebrating Reps and Unions’ wins

This year’s Congress follows a year which has seen a significant upturn in unions engaging in industrial action – including the CSP and others in healthcare.

In recognition of these important developments, the TUC is organising a ‘RepsConnect@Congress’ event on Sunday 10 September.

The event will provide an opportunity to showcase the achievements of union reps in the previous year and also enable reps to network and access TUC education support.

Those joining this event will also be given a visitor’s pass for Congress’ Sunday session and invited to join the President’s reception at the close of Sunday's activities.

CSP stewards, safety reps, and equality reps – particularly those in the North West – are encouraged to register to attend.

If you do register, also let us know you intend to attend via the same webform above.  This will allow the CSP to provide support prior to this important event and seek your feedback from it.
