Major changes have been announced to transform health and social care in Wales, with a focus on strengthening community services to create less reliance on hospitals.
The proposals have been announced as part of the Welsh government’s long-term plan A Healthier Wales, and supported by a £100million fund.
Philippa Ford, CSP public affairs and policy manager for Wales, said:
‘It is very encouraging to see the emphasis placed on providing care closer to home and in a seamless way, which is better for patients and better for the system as a whole.
‘This builds upon many of the positive things already happening with out-of-hospital services in Wales, particularly in primary care where physiotherapists and other professionals are working alongside GPs to allow patients to see the right person at the first opportunity.
‘Another element of this transformation is on rehabilitation services that keep people out of hospital, where it is to be hoped that the greater focus means fewer people miss out.
‘The success of the plan will rely on the staff that work across health and social care. Strong leadership will be required and the CSP is looking forward to opportunities for physiotherapists and other allied health professions to demonstrate their leadership in delivering on the plan.’
