Dementia is no barrier to Love activity

The Alzheimer’s Society and Sport England have launched a guide to help physiotherapy staff and others to support - and empower - people who are living with dementia to lead active lives.

CSP member and Alzheimer’s Society-funded clinical doctoral research fellow Pippa Collins gave the guide a warm welcome.

She said: ‘It’s great to hear of an initiative where we are acknowledging the rights of people with dementia to remain active and involved with all sporting and physical activities and to see an ethic of inclusion – rather than exclusion – at the forefront.’

The guide complements the CSP’s Love activity, Hate exercise? campaign, which is also designed to remove barriers that prevent people from being active.

Sport England chief executive Tim Hollingsworth said he wanted to transform the way the sport and physical activity sector thinks, acts and talks about dementia.

Dementia is one of the greatest challenges facing society today and there are 850,000 people living with the condition in the UK.

Meanwhile, research by the Alzheimer’s Society reveals that leisure pursuits are among the top activities people with dementia want to do after a diagnosis.
