John, who trained as a physio in Ireland before working for the NHS in England, has previously held senior leadership roles in both healthcare and the charity sector, including most recently at the Royal British Legion Industries.

John lives in West Sussex with his partner, David, and his two children Jack and Lucy. He is an avid cook, and also enjoys painting water colours and travel.

Announcing his appointment, Ishmael Beckford, chair of the CSP Council, said: 'I am delighted to welcome John to the CSP. His experience of operational leadership in healthcare and the not-for-profit sector, knowledge of the profession and passion for equity, diversity and belonging made him the standout candidate.

'He is highly motivated to deliver the objectives of the CSP strategy and is ready to lead the organisation into the future, maintaining a focus on meeting member needs and championing the profession. I know members, staff and partners will welcome him.'

Accepting the appointment, John said: 'This truly feels like a full circle moment for me. It is simply the greatest privilege to be asked to lead the CSP alongside Council.

I have always felt a real pride in my profession and I have seen the impact created through the innovation of CSP members throughout my career.

I am keen to ensure that physiotherapy develops as a profession, influencing care, support and rehabilitation across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man

'I am inspired by the CSP’s commitment to equity, diversity and belonging and want to play a key role in ensuring that the ambitions outlined in the strategy create the greatest impact for members, patients and clients and the wider system of health and care.

'I have always been inspired by a quote from T.S. Eliot and I think it is truer now with this role and in my life than it ever has been before:

We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time

John is due to start in his new role on 2 January 2024, and he will be introducing himself to CSP members, staff and stakeholders throughout the beginning of next year.

Karen Middleton, who has successfully led the CSP for ten years, will retire at the end of December 2023.
