Appraisals – a guide for Associate Members

This paper is a guide to CSP Associate members and those conducting their appraisals. It explains the reason for appraisals, preparation for the meeting and post-appraisal reflection.

Appraisals are one element of a governance framework that supports you to maintain enhance and develop your competence.

At whatever stage in your career, appraisals are an opportunity for you and your line manager to do the following:

  • Identify what you need to know
  • Target any gaps
  • Consider activities for areas where you may be lacking experience
  • Plan future objectives to enable career development

Appraisals should be a positive experience, be confidential and should not be undertaken by someone at the same level as the person being appraised.
