CSP joins call for rate relief

The CSP is part of an alliance of professional and trade bodies that has today called on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to extend rate relief to professionals operating through small businesses.

Around one in four private practitioner physios are believed to pay non domestic rates. They have not been given the same rate relief that some other businesses have been granted because physio clinics have not been required to close during the Covid-19 pandemic.

By following public health requirements most private practices have been severely limited on how much work they can do. Two thirds of private practices are offering virtual consultations but are unable to provide face-to-face services except in essential and urgent situations. Income has fallen dramatically for most, but fixed costs like rates are still having to be paid.

In addition to writing to the Chancellor, the alliance has briefed the Treasury and Business select committee chairs and key opposition spokespeople. The latest lobbying follows previous multi-profession lobbying covering access to other forms of financial support for private practitioners and the self-employed.

The organisations supporting the call for rate relief are:

  • British Association of Music Therapists
  • British Association of Sport Rehabilitation Therapists
  • British Chiropractic Association
  • British Dental Association
  • British Dietetic Association
  • Chartered Institute of Management Accountants
  • Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
  • College of Podiatry
  • Institute of Osteopathy
  • MSK Partners
  • Physiotherapy First
  • Royal College of Chiropractors
  • Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy
  • Royal College of Occupational Therapists
  • Society of Sports Therapists.
